There is no specific diet for Hepatitis. However, studies have shown that consuming a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight and doing regular exercise can help to maintain the health of your liver. Consuming complex carbohydrates and lean protein; and avoiding foods rich in fats, gluten and sodium can go a long way in preventing liver damage.

Your liver converts everything you eat or drink into energy essential for living. Liver produces nutrients so that your body can use them in vital functions like building cells, producing energy and maintaining normal body functions. Hepatitis infections can lead to damage and destruction of liver cells. It has been observed that patients infected with Hepatitis C are prone to diabetes than the ones who are not infected, but following a nutritious diet can help reduce body fats and help control blood sugar. Fortunately, liver has a remarkable ability of healing itself and you can help protect your liver just by eating right.

We are providing the necessary food recommendations for Hepatitis that can help.


Recommended Foods:

  • Vegetarian food is recommended. It should contain green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, lettuce, coriander, curry leaves.
  • Other vegetable like beets, carrot, radish, broccoli, and brussels
  • Spices like turmeric, garlic, cloves, cinnamon are excellent
  • Fruits- grapefruit, sugarcane juice, strawberries, lemon, oranges, apples, avocados, and walnuts
  • Eat wholegrain cereals, breads, and grains
  • Consume lean proteins such as egg whites, nonfat yogurt or milk, beans, nuts, fish and poultry.
  • Choosehealthy fats, such as canola and olive oil.


Foods for Moderate Consumption:

Limit the use of oil, ghee, butter, dairy and fruits like custard apple, and chikoo (sapodilla)



Foods to Avoid:

  • Alcohol in any form should be completely avoided in Cirrhotic liver.
  • Non-vegetarian food should be avoided; this includes sea food, lean meat, eggs.
  • Completely avoid frozen, preserved, canned foods, including chips, soups, meats or vegetables, there are known to have high salt or sugar content, which may lead to fluid retention.
  • Avoid sugary foods such as chocolates, ice-cream, candies and cake
  • Avoid wheat and gluten, white flour and soda
  • Avoid bakery goods such as pastries, donuts, cookies, white bread, white pasta as they contain unrefined carbohydrates and sugar
  • Avoid dairy products since they are hard to digest
  • Avoid artificial sweeteners, fruit drinks, and sweetened energy drinks and teas
  • Reduce sodium intake. Avoid processed foods, which are often high in sodium and other additives like potato chips, etc.
